Fire service confirms cause of thick clouds of black smoke over Plymouth Hoe

That a camping petrol cylinder was the origin of the fire and ‘explosions’ on the Plymouth Hoe has been established. At 11:33 a.m. on Friday, October 11, firefighters were dispatched to the Hoe Road fire incident.

A tent was alight on the promenade grass close to Smeatons Tower when crews arrived on the scene. It was determined that the fire was caused by a camping gas cyclinder.

Someone reported hearing “gas explosions” close to the military installation to PlymouthLive. A video taken at the location showed thick plumes of black smoke spilling into the sky below.

It is not thought that the fire caused any injuries to anyone. The fire service has reported that a minor area of the grass was damaged by the fire.

A tent and a camping petrol cylinder caught fire, according to a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue representative who talked to PlymouthLive. They stated: “A small tent was burning on the grassland of the promenade when we were summoned to Hoe Road at 11.33 a.m.

“One crew put out the flames and cooled a camping gas cylinder that had been a part of the fire using a hose reel jet. There were no injuries; however, the grass had some minor damage.
