Former Arsenal star and current U-18s head coach Jack Wilshere agrees ‘exciting’ Norwich City move

This week, Jack Wilshere is leaving Arsenal to become a coach at Norwich City.

Although Wilshere has been the head coach of Arsenal’s Under-18 team since 2022, the 32-year-old will take a first-

team role under Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Wilshere is scheduled to begin work at the Championship club on Thursday after Norwich and Arsenal reached an

agreement on a compensation payment.

According to Wilshere, the transfer should help his coaching career.

Wilshere will start when the team return on Thursday after Norwich’s Tuesday match against Preston and

Wednesday off.

Wilshere has met with Thorup and his team on a few occasions while at the Norwich training facility.

He is thrilled with the transfer, and Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper, a former Arsenal employee, helped the

teams’ negotiations go well.

After retiring from playing at the age of 30, Wilshere began his career with Arsenal Under-18s, and in his first season

as manager, he guided the Gunners to the FA Youth Cup Final.

Wilshere’s hiring is expected to increase “interest” and “excitement” in the club, according to Norwich manager

Thorup.

Thorup told BBC Radio Norfolk, when asked if Wilshere-caliber individuals were linked, “We have to make sure we

have people in the building that would be interesting for other clubs.”

He went on: “People want to be here because we are going to create something unique, an exciting atmosphere, a

culture, and a style of play.

“And people from outside look at the people here and that’s a good connection to have because it creates some

interest and it creates some excitement and that’s what we want.”

Last October, Wilshere discussed taking over as head coach of the Colorado Rapids, an MLS team, but decided to remain at Arsenal instead.

With nine points from their first six games of the season, Arsenal is ranked eleventh in the Premier League Under-

18s standings. Coincidentally, their next game is on Saturday away at Norwich.

The first team of Norwich is aiming for promotion and currently sits eighth in the Championship.
