Bruno Lage explains Wolves spell gave him fresh awareness - "Part of any coach's experience" - Sport Witness

Bruno Lage somewhat landed on his feet in the summer.

He was fired in early October 2023 after a brief but turbulent tenure with Botafogo in Brazil. After being out of job for over a year, the manager was hired by Benfica in September of this year after the club fired Roger Schmidt.

Lage was fired by Botafogo on October 3rd, exactly a year and a day after being fired by Wolves.

The manager’s term with Wolves had lasted longer than his three-month stint in Brazil, and things weren’t all awful in England. However, he failed to get the squad to do what he wanted, and that was the end of it.

The 48-year-old presently has Benfica third in Liga Portugal, but his focus this week shifts to the Champions League and a match against Eredivisie team Feyenoord.

Lage isn’t in his first term at Benfica, having won the title with them in 2019, but when asked how he’s improved since, the manager referred to the experience he had while at Wolves.

According to A Bola, he stated that his tenure as head coach in the Premier League provided him with new experiences, which are common for all coaches. The more experience we have, the more we will learn from our results. The way I operate, we learn a lot from our assessments of our opponents, but most importantly, from our own team.

“We don’t go into the next game without understanding very well the level at which the team is performing at each moment and also understanding whether a certain strategy was implemented or not.”

It’s a shame he didn’t develop more charisma.
