“Be lucky to get £1m-£2m” – Norwich City, Christian Fassnacht claim issued amid transfer talks

Norwich City winger Christian Fassnacht is allegedly in talks to return to previous club Young Boys, as his contract in Norfolk expires.

Fassnacht did not have a very impressive first season with the Canaries in 2023/24, despite scoring six goals in the Championship. However, his current campaign has been limited, with no appearances since an opening-day loss to Oxford United owing to Achilles issues.

The Swissman is also out of contract next summer; Norwich has an option for a one-year extension, but the fact that transfer talks have already commenced implies that this option will not be exercised.

Fassnacht played almost 250 games for Young Boys, so it’s understandable if he desires a homecoming, but how would Norwich fans react if he leaves?

Zeke Downes, FLW’s Norwich City fan commentator, believes Fassnacht hasn’t been used as well as he could have been during his time at Carrow Road, and that there is still a player there who Thorup may benefit from.

“Fassnacht is an odd one,” Zeke told FLW.

“I still have great faith in him. I believe he has been misused in the team; he is not a winger, and he appears uncomfortable on the wing.

“Whenever he came on, he often scored a goal, and we do need that; people off the bench who look like they can score a goal might be very important.

“I just don’t know if he’ll have the opportunity now that his route is nearly barred, but I believe he’s still very important and has a lot to offer.

“He has the potential to prove many people wrong, but I doubt that will happen. I believe he will move because his contract has only a year left.

“I don’t think it will be that much (the transfer price). We’ll be lucky to receive £1 or £2 million. I believe we’ll finish up

Norwich City: Christian Fassnacht departure would seem right for all parties

As Zeke mentioned, Fassanacht has been utilised inappropriately at times, but his overall performance for Norwich has been poor.

Fassnacht had a fantastic record in Switzerland and even played Champions League football with Young Boys, but he decided to make a career change and relocate to England last year.

While Fassnacht is now injured, Norwich manager Thorup has choices out wide in Ante Crnac, Borja Sainz, Kaide Gordon, and Onel Hernandez, so if the Swiss international leaves, the Dane will not be short of options.

Norwich will be unhappy following Fassnacht’s outstanding record before moving to East Anglia, and a substantial sum appears unlikely due to his contract predicament.
