Hard to take’ Golden Boot contender opens up on Celtic situation with deal set to expire

Johnny Kenny, a Celtic kid, is making waves in Ireland this season

Johnny Kenny, a League of Ireland Golden Boot contender, has expressed his disappointment with Celtic for not making more of an effort with him during his loan term at Shamrock Rovers, claiming he is doing everything he can to prove his parent club wrong.

Kenny, who joined Celtic from Sligo Rovers as an 18-year-old in January 2022, is yet to make his first appearance for the club after signing a five-year contract.

After joining Celtic, he was almost immediately leased out to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship, but he made only 12 appearances and did not score.

However, this season he has evolved into one of the most prolific attackers in Irish football, with 12 goals and two assists in 27 league appearances, behind only the division’s top scorer, Patrick Hoban, by two goals.

He has also scored twice in three Champions League qualifying matches and hopes to make an impact in the Europa Conference League this season. Kenny is an important part of Shamrock Rovers’ quest for a fifth straight league title, but he says that the lack of recognition in Glasgow is difficult to accept.

In an interview with The Irish Independent, he stated: “It is challenging.

“They are my current club, but all you have to do is prove them incorrect on the pitch and see what happens. It’s just a note here and there from Darren O’Dea, Celtic’s professional player pathway manager. I’m in the final few months of my contract with Celtic, so we’ll see what happens.
