“Badly needs upgrading”—Pundit  labels Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium Hillsborough as worst in Championship

Adrian Durham, a presenter on TalkSPORT, has named Hillsborough, the home pitch of Sheffield Wednesday, as his least favourite

Championship stadium.

For both positive and negative reasons, Hillsborough has been and will continue to be linked to some of the most significant events in

English football history.

Although most football fans associate Hillsborough with the tragedy that occurred on April 15, 1989, when 97 Liverpool supporters

went to watch their team play against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and never returned, the town has also seen many positive

developments.

In recent seasons, Wednesday has survived relegation after achieving two different incredible comebacks to enable them gain

promotion. All of that was accomplished with the support of the people in the stadium’s blue half.

However, this season, staying at home hasn’t been too beneficial. They have seven points, which puts them in 18th place in the

Championship’s 2024–25 home standings.

Despite mixed recent form, it’s a place that will forever be stooped in infamy, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Adrian Durham puts Hillsborough as his least favourite Championship stadium

Durham, the primary broadcaster of live football on GameDay Live and a former host of the talkSPORT Drive show for 15 years, just

finished the 92-game tour, which involved visiting every stadium in the Premier League and EFL.

He has compiled lists of his favourite and worst English football stadiums since accomplishing this long-time ambition of many

football fans.

He is a Peterborough United supporter, and the Posh’s most recent memory of a trip to visit Wednesday was not a good one.

The aforementioned historic outcome, in which the Owls overcame a four-goal deficit from the first leg of the 2023 League One play-

off semi-final between the two clubs, did not go their way. After losing 5-1 in the second leg, Peterborough lost on penalties. After that,

Wednesday defeated Barnsley at Wembley to advance to the second division.

Durham made no secret of the fact that that game had influenced his choice of Hillsborough as one of his Championship stadiums.”A

lot of it is very dated and badly needs upgrading,” Durham asserted. “The low ranking may have something to do with a certain team

bottling a 4-0 lead in the play-off semi-finals there…”

Durham’s rankings placed Leeds United’s stadium in second place, while Bramall Lane, the site of Sheffield United, Wednesday’s

fierce Steel City rivals, finished in ninth. In fact, Loftus Road is the presenter’s favourite stadium in the entire 92, with Elland Road

coming in second.

Hillsborough isn’t the worst ground in the Championship

Regardless of his nightmares about the location, Durham’s decision to rank the Owls’ home stadium last among all second-tier

stadiums is a very bold one, and he receives a little more respect for being honest rather than trying to hide behind some other excuse.

Some of the grounds that are in front of Hillsborough are these. Even though it feels antiquated, Durham says that Hillsborough has

more character and individuality than locations like Hull City’s MKM Stadium, Stoke City’s bet365 Stadium, and Oxford United’s

Kassam Stadium.

Although it’s by no means the best, it’s more difficult to defend placing it dead last than first.
