House fire being treated as ‘targeted attack’

House fire being treated as ‘targeted attack’

It’s being called a “targeted attack” after a house fire left two people with leg fractures after they leapt out of an upper window, leaving

a family homeless.

Just before 05:20 BST today, emergency personnel were dispatched to a property on Portman Road, Ipswich, in response to reports

that it had caught fire.

Four people were able to leave the house without getting hurt, however a lady and a man were hospitalised after inhaling smoke and

sustaining severe leg injuries.

A 24-year-old Felixstowe man has been detained in relation to the incident, according to Suffolk Police, which is investigating the

incident as arson. To be questioned, he was brought to the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.

Firefighters from the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service discovered fires on the first and ground floors when they arrived at the scene,

which was close to the football stadium of Ipswich Town.

Eleven residents had their houses evacuated and four personnel worked to put out the fire before it spread to any more premises.

Ipswich Borough Council made arrangements for them to stay at a refuge centre until it was safe for them to return.

“The incident is being treated as suspicious, and initial police enquiries lead officers to believe that this was a localised and targeted

attack,” a Suffolk Police spokesperson stated.

“A police scene is currently in place around property.”

Gina Gumble resides in a building of apartments across from the burning property.

“I got up this morning and looked outside and saw flames coming out of the house,” the woman stated. “All I could hear this morning was a lot of shouting.”

“We were worried about whether everyone made it out because we could also see the flames coming through the roof.”

“It was a bit of a shock to wake up to.”

Kevin Duggan lives next door to the house which caught fire.

“I was half asleep when I heard a kid shouting things like ‘help’ and ‘fire,'” the man stated.

“We observed police, fire, and ambulance vehicles, and subsequently, I noticed an enormous amount of smoke emanating from my neighbor’s garden.”

Then a policeman knocked on our door and told us we had to go out. As for [when we will be allowed to return], we have no idea.

“It’s not your typical morning start, but I apologise to everyone who has been directly involved,” he continued. It was unsettling.”

At this point, Suffolk Police is investigating the fire as arson.

“Officers are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area prior to the incident,” a police spokesman stated.

“South CID at Landmark House in Ipswich is asking anyone with information to get in touch with them, quoting reference: 45775/24.”
