Birmingham City’s forgotten man is threatening to take off after hellish 18 months

Birmingham City loaned George Hall to Walsall at the end of the summer transfer window.

George Hall recorded his first senior goal contribution since April 15, 2023 at the weekend as he helped loan club Walsall to a resounding 4-1 win at Grimsby Town.

The Birmingham City midfielder has endured a hellish 18 months due to a succession of hamstring injuries, the first of which happened in a game at Sunderland at the tail-end of his breakout 2022/23 season. Hall only played 133 minutes of league football for Blues last term.

New Blues boss Chris Davies couldn’t find a role for Hall and the 20-year-old was loaned to Walsall at the end of the summer transfer window. Hall wants to prove two things at the Bescot Stadium: his fitness and that he can recapture the form that made him sought after by Premier League clubs earlier in his career.

Hall’s minutes have been limited by a back issue but he was recalled to the squad by Mat Sadler on Saturday and didn’t disappoint. With Walsall 3-1 up at Blundell Park in stoppage time, Hall latched onto a clever pass from Connor Barrett, skipped beyond a defender and cut the ball back for Danny Johnson to tap in.

Praising Hall afterwards, Sadler said: “George has been fantastic for the last couple of weeks in training. Remembering where George has been with his body and the injuries he’s had, we were fully aware it might take a little bit of time to get the George Hall of 18 months ago.

“In the last two or three weeks we’ve really started to see that and I wanted to give him that reward today, not only by bringing him on and having him on the bench, because he’s starting to look like the player that we all know he is.”

Hall has only started once in League Two for a Saddlers side riding high under Sadler. Walsall are currently third in the table but they will return to top spot if they win their game-in-hand.
