Birmingham City have already done something significant in League One promotion race

Birmingham City maintained their lead at the top of League One with a 3-1 win over Lincoln City on Saturday

Birmingham City laid down another marker by beating Lincoln City so comprehensively on Saturday.

Imps message boards on Saturday evening and Sunday morning were flooded with praise for top-of-the-table Blues. Buoyed by their own team’s performance, Lincoln fans were shown the gulf in class.

They are a team that will likely challenge for the play-offs in League One, but they barely laid a glove on Blues after Keshi Anderson cancelled out Bailey Cadamarteri’s first minute strike. It was clear from that moment on that Blues would go on to win the game.

At 2-1, with 18 minutes to go, Paik Seung-ho clumsily shot Blues in the foot by bundling over Conor McGrandle for a penalty. Ryan Allsop saved Reeco Hackett’s spot-kick and Anderson made the game safe with 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

We have been enthused about Blues’ ability to come from behind, which they have done five times in League One to take 13 points, but their ability to beat the teams around them is equally impressive.

Blues have defeated four of the six teams directly below them in the current League One standings. Wrexham (2nd), Wycombe (3rd), Huddersfield (6th) and Lincoln (7th) have all lost to Blues.

Wrexham and Wycombe have played each other, as have Lincoln and Mansfield, but the other fixtures between those teams are still to take place. Blues travel to Mansfield on Saturday after Tuesday’s match with a Bolton Wanderers side who lost in the play-off final last season.

The results tally with what rival managers have been alluding to in their comments about Blues. Many of them see it as a race for second place and the play-off places.

Huddersfield manager Michael Duff made the most telling admission after his team’s 1-0 defeat at St Andrew’s on October 1. “I don’t think we’re going to get judged on Birmingham away,” he said.

That is usually what the manager of a relegation battling side says after his team visits the league leaders. And Huddersfield are supposed to be one of Blues’ biggest challengers this season.

Games against Blues are seemingly free-hits, even for the sides closest to Chris Davies’ men in the table. Ten games in and Blues are on course for an immediate return to the Championship if they maintain their standards and professionalism. Rest assured knowing Davies won’t let either of those two things wane.
