Bristol City and Burnley FC both hit the jackpot with respective Josh Brownhill decisions – View

Josh Brownhill, a midfielder for Burnley, is looking to lead his team to promotion from the Championship this year.

Although Burnley’s season in the Premier League ended in excruciating disappointment as they were demoted after just one year in

the top division, they are well-positioned to return at the first opportunity.

When manager Vincent Kompany left for Bayern Munich in May, the Clarets suffered a great loss. However, they replaced him with

two-time promotion winner Scott Parker, and the 44-year-old has settled in well at Turf Moor..

Burnley lost a number of key players this summer following relegation, including the likes of Aro Muric, Vitinho, Dara O’Shea, Sander

Berge, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Anass Zaroury, Wilson Odobert and Zeki Amdouni, but Brownhill remained loyal to the club.

Brownhill has built a strong relationship with Clarets supporters since his arrival in January 2020, and fans of his former club, Bristol

City, will also have positive memories of the midfielder.

While fans of Bristol City may have mixed feelings about former manager Lee Johnson, Brownhill’s hiring was unquestionably the best

move he made while he was at the team.

Brownhill came through Preston North End’s youth, although in the later half of his tenure at Deepdale, he struggled to get playing

time. In January 2016, while managing League One Barnsley, Johnson signed Brownhill on loan.

Brownhill was a major factor in the Tykes’ success when they were promoted to the Championship under Paul Heckingbottom, who

took over at Ashton Gate after Johnson left the following month.

Brownhill had clearly made a big enough impression on Johnson during their brief spell working together at Oakwell to convince him

to bring him to City in the summer of 2016, and was a mainstay in the team over the next three-and-a-half years.

Josh Brownhill’s stats for Bristol City (according to Transfermarkt)
Season Appearances Goals Assists
2016-17 32 1 1
2017-18 51 5 5
2018-19 49 6 4
2019-20 29 5 2

The midfielder became into one of the Robins’ most reliable players very fast. He also had some memorable moments, like the

incredible goal he scored in the 1-0 Severnside derby triumph over Cardiff City in November 2019.

After being chosen City’s captain for the 2019–20 campaign, Brownhill seemed to thrive in a more demanding role. Still, other teams

gradually took notice of his excellent play.

Johnson was upset to lose one of his key players, adding that “it felt like I was selling my son.” The 28-year-old moved to then Premier

League side Burnley in January 2020 for a cost of approximately £9 million.

Brownhill may not have been able to lead the Robins to the play-offs during his time at Ashton Gate, but he did leave fans with many

unforgettable moments and more money than they could have ever dreamed for the club.

Keeping hold of Josh Brownhill was crucial for Burnley this summer

After joining Turf Moor, Brownhill took some time to split up Ashley Westwood and Jack Cork, Sean Dyche’s reliable midfield duo.

However, an injury to Cork in the summer of 2020 gave Brownhill the opportunity to gain experience and establish himself in the

squad.

Brownhill didn’t appear out of place in the Premier League, and even if the Clarets were demoted from the top division in the 2021–

2022 campaign, the midfielder wasn’t entirely to blame.

While most anticipated Brownhill to be one of Burnley’s most valuable assets in the Championship, very few anticipated that, with

Vincent Kompany at his side, he would elevate his game even further.

Brownhill enjoyed the best season of his career as the Clarets won the Championship title in Kompany’s first year in charge, scoring an

impressive seven goals and providing nine assists in 48 appearances.

Unfortunately for Burnley, they found life much tougher in the top flight, but despite enduring his second relegation during his time at

the club, Brownhill was one of few players to emerge with any credit from what was a hugely underwhelming season

However, the Clarets turned down a £3.4 million deal for him from Turkish team Trabzonspor, and to the fans’ pleasure, he stayed at

Turf Moor.

After an incredible start to the season, Brownhill looks on track to potentially surpass the numbers he produced in the 2022–2023

campaign. Parker named Brownhill Burnley’s new captain in August, citing “his stature within the squad” as a major factor in his

decision.

Brownhill’s contract is slated to expire in the summer, but it has been reported that Trabzonspor are still interested in signing him.

They may try to sign him in January or try to come to a pre-contract arrangement that would allow him to join in the summer.

Brownhill stated that he would prefer to stay with the Clarets past the summer of next year, but he did not rule out leaving the team.

Should this be his last season in Lancashire, he will be driven to leave the team with one more promotion.
