How Ipswich saved Sean Dyche from making a big transfer mistake in the summer

Everton were in for so many players over the summer, and yet only managed to bring a handful of them to Goodison Park.

Except for Jake O’Brien, everyone who has joined has essentially made their mark.

For the most part, Kevin Thelwell performed a good job of supporting several regions that were in dire need of special revitalization.

Outside, though, they were left painfully empty as players like Largie Ramanzani, Wilfried Gnonto, Jaden Philogene, and many others chose not to relocate to Merseyside, forcing them to settle for Jesper Lindstrom in the end.

While Everton will always regret some of their failed purchases, they may now look back on some of them and consider themselves lucky to have failed.

Everton tried to sign Kalvin Phillips in the summer

Ipswich Town’s Kalvin Phillips, who started and played 71 minutes for the home team yesterday, is a good example of this type of player.

When he was brought in on loan from Manchester City, it seemed like they were competing with the Toffees and other Premier League teams for his signature.

Kalvin Phillips was desired by Everton, and the manager of Everton was apparently adamant about wanting to bring him to Goodison as well.

Nevertheless, his transfer to Merseyside fell through, maybe because of a lack of money to cover the loan or just the player’s preference to relocate to Portman Road.

Everton was spared a disastrous transfer by Ipswich Town.

Given how he played against Everton’s midfield yesterday, Sean Dyche will probably be relieved of this transfer gaffe.

He was alone in the engine room, after all, and that gave the Toffees acres and acres of space to explore.

This area was especially helpful to Dwight McNeil, who was able to manage the operation somewhat easily.

According to Sofascore, Phillips’ incompetence was further evidenced by the fact that he lost only five of the 10 duels he participated in, was once dribbled past, and even committed another mistake that gave Everton a chance.

Without Phillips, Dyche is well-positioned in his midfield, with options including Orel Mangala, James Garner, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Idrissa Gana Gueye, and Tim Iroegbunam.
