Pundits are divided over Aberdeen’s choice to cut off Duk’s goal as they attempted to pull off an incredible comeback against Celtic.

As the top two squared off in Glasgow’s east end, Jimmy Thelin’s team rallied from a 2-0 deficit against the home of the Scottish Premiership champions and believed they had won it in the closing minutes. With the score tied at 2-2, Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic received a free kick from the left that would rocket off Dons’ forward Duk and past Kasper Schmeichel.

However, VAR intervened to chalk with the goal off, giving Celtic a huge letoff. Greg Aitken in the VAR room would chalk off the goal after referee Nick Walsh had first approved it, keeping the score tied. Not all of the commentators, though, agreed with the ruling. On Red TV, Billy Dodds stated: “I don’t see a lot of it. It’s going to be severe and forensic. If it’s handball, it is the rules. It is truly a major choice for Celtic.

The match official made the correct judgment, though, according to Pat Bonner on BBC Sportsound: “VAR has done its job.” That’s the reality. The Aberdeen players’ disappointment is evident.
