‘Dreadful’ – Sky Sports pundit slams Leeds attacker for what he did in win v Sheffield United

Joel Piroe has been slammed by Andy Hinchliffe for a “dreadful” moment in the clash between Leeds United and Sheffield United.

The Whites returned from the international break with three points, winning 2-0 at Elland Road on Friday (18 October), thanks to second-half goals from Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph.
Although Daniel Farke’s team eventually triumphed handily, Sky Sports pundit Hinchliffe ripped into Piroe moments before Struijk’s strike from just beyond the penalty area.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (18 October, 21:13), he said: “It’s a terrible finish, but intelligent positioning.

“He actually slides off into a number 10 pocket of space because Aaronson has sprinted by him to become the center forward.

“Then Piroe may get into a position where he’d rather be, stepping in front of center halves rather than against them. But he should be getting greater results from his strike.”

What has happened to Leeds United ace Joel Piroe at Elland Road?

Piroe is an incredibly difficult footballer to explain. In one game, the Dutchman can appear to be an extremely calm presence in the penalty box, while in another, he appears to be a defender who has inadvertently entered the final third.

His finish on Friday night was so crazy that it would have made any defender blush. The striker took aim from the edge of the box, but the ball just kept rising until it cleared Michael Cooper’s crossbar.

The best strikers in the Championship would test the goalkeeper from that distance. Nobody expects Piroe to rocket his effort into the top corner, but he must at least challenge the goalkeeper.

Hopefully, with another start under his belt, Piroe’s confidence will grow during the season.

Strikers are considerably calmer in front of goal when they are convinced they will score, and the Dutchman does not appear to have that confidence right now. Fortunately, he still made a great pass for Joseph’s goal.
