‘We have clear belief in how to make him most effective’ – McKenna on Hutchinson role

Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, claims he has a “clear belief” about Omari Hutchinson’s ideal position on the team.

The talented attacker spent the majority of his Championship time on the right wing, but since joining Chelsea permanently for a club-record £18 million, he has been used more centrally.

He contributed to four goals for the England Under-21s on Tuesday night after a brilliant 30-minute cameo on the right wing against Azerbaijan.

Wes Burns played on the left flank for Wales, and Dara O’Shea played right back for the Republic of Ireland.

When asked if any of the aforementioned had given him any thought before tomorrow’s Premier League match at Portman Road against Everton, McKenna answered, “Not in Omari’s case, to be honest.” He has spent sixteen months here. He played for us in about 40 games last season, about 20 of which were as a right winger, about 20 as a right-10, and a few as a left-10. Omari has therefore played both positions extensively, and we have a good idea of how to use him most effectively in certain situations and games.

Dara has experience playing right back. Although it wasn’t a major factor in his recruitment to the team, we were aware that he could play the position and that having a versatile defence could be helpful throughout the season.

That offers us an additional choice. He also has good experience playing a variety of positions. He has played left center-half for Ireland in a three, right back, middle centre-back in a four, and right centre-back in a five. To be honest, I don’t think we learnt anything new.”
