AFL 20-24: Brendon Bolton departs Collingwood for St Kilda, Jared Rivers, assistant coaching changes, latest news

Collingwood’s football department shake-up has continued, with Brendon Bolton joining St Kilda as an assistant coach under Ross Lyon.

The Saints have recruited Bolton and former Magpies assistant Jared Rivers to their coaching staff for 2025 as part of a restructuring that also involves Brendon Goddard taking over VFL coaching duties.

Bolton joined Collingwood at the end of 2021, with fellow ex-AFL coach Justin Leppitsch, to assist the club’s newly installed Craig McRae in becoming important contributors to the club’s 2023 championship victory.

Bolton, 45, replaced Graham Wright as Collingwood’s football manager this year after Wright took a prolonged sabbatical before leaving to become Carlton’s new CEO.

Pies list manager Leppitsch and Bolton split duties in Wright’s absence during 2024, despite reports of conflict between the two. The club is currently looking for a permanent football general manager after unsuccessful offers for Port Adelaide’s Chris Davies and Brisbane’s Danny Daly.

Matthew Boyd has already returned to Collingwood’s coaching staff for 2025, following a two-year stint as an assistant at Fremantle.

Bolton was Carlton’s senior coach from 2016 to 2019, following a stint as an assistant to Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn during the club’s golden era in the 2010s.

“I’d like to thank the coaches, players and staff who I have worked closely with during my time at Collingwood,” Bolton informed the media.

“Working with such creative individuals invigorated me, and serving in a variety of jobs provided me with experience that I would not have had otherwise.

“While I am incredibly grateful for my time at Collingwood, my passion right now remains on playing a role as a coach in an AFL program which I am looking forward to getting stuck into.”
