After going through the train ride from hell, Alan Shearer explained why he gave Sunderland supporters the “f**k you” answer.
When talking about his turbulent journey from attending a friend’s wedding in Italy to trying to make it in time for his son’s birthday and the Magpies’ home match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, the Newcastle legend was in narrative mode on the most recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast.
As he provided a reaction to the opposing supporters who had been taunting him with songs for hours on end, Shearer saw the light at the end of the tunnel when the train carrying Sunderland to Newcastle unloaded half of the crowd. “I thought, ‘Please let them all get off at Durham,’ as I made it all the way to Newcastle. Half of them did so, but the other half stayed until Newcastle.”
“When I got off the station, I was terrified because no one recognized me, I didn’t move for four hours, and I wasn’t even spotted once. They just sang and threw abuse at me for four hours.” I can hear you all, so f*** you, Sunderland supporters riding back on Coach C.”
Given that Sunderland overcame Portsmouth 3-1 to extend their winning streak to the season and that Newcastle upset Spurs 2-1 courtesy to a late goal from Alexander Isak, it’s easy to see why Sunderland supporters were in such a joyful mood.
