Bradford City in line for selection boost ahead of Gillingham clash

Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has said Neill Byrne should be ‘fine’ to play this weekend.

Bradford City return to League Two action on Saturday with a home game against Gillingham.
Due to illness, Byrne, 31, was unable to travel to Prenton Park to face Tranmere Rovers last week.

According to The Yorkshire Post, Alexander stated in his most recent update: “We’re fluctuating at the moment because this disease has been spreading among the group a little bit. We had a few lads miss yesterday, and they were all different. We lost Byrner on Saturday, and another three or four since then.

“We have to exercise and be together, but we try to minimize the time this week so that everyone has the best opportunity of keeping healthy. Byrner was a little off his game when he trained (on Tuesday) due to a lack of energy. But he had a full training session on Wednesday.

“I spoke with him afterwards, and he said he felt much better. With another 72 hours until the game (Wednesday), I believe he will be ready for selection. But the other men have it now. Byrner spent 24 hours feeling unwell and then just replenished his energy levels.”

Bradford City selection boost

Having Byrne back will be beneficial to Bradford City.
He gives them more experience in the back and gives Alexander another choice to choose from.
The Irishman joined the Bantams from Stockport County this summer to add competition and depth to their ranks.

Byrne has subsequently made nine appearances in all competitions for the Yorkshire club and has settled in well.
He helped the Hatters achieve promotion to League One last season and will hope to do it again with his new squad.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international has played over 450 games in his career, including spells at Barrow, Hartlepool United, and Tranmere Rovers.

What now?

Bradford City will monitor how he feels over the next several days as they prepare to play Gillingham.

The Bantams triumphed 2-0 away to Tranmere Rovers last time out.
They are now seventh in the league, with a goal difference advantage over Grimsby Town in eighth.
