Leeds United staff block free transfer deal – Sources

Leeds United have withdrawn out of a free transfer deal for Cheikhou Kouyate after he failed his physical, according to MOT Leeds News.

The former West Ham and Crystal Palace midfielder was linked with a move to Elland Road to cover for Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev’s recent injuries.

The 34-year-old completed medical tests at Thorp Arch this week, but MOT Leeds News understands Leeds’ medical professionals halted any possibility of a deal going ahead after failing to give him the all-clear.

Kouyate is now a free agent after leaving Nottingham Forest at the conclusion of his contract last summer, but this latest development suggests he will continue without a club.

The midfielder would have given insurance for the Whites’ injuries, which have been a major issue for Daniel Farke’s team recently.

Losing the two starting midfielders at Elland Road will undoubtedly be a setback, putting additional pressure on Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell.

A move for Kouyate appears to be off, leaving the German manager’s roster depleted in the coming weeks and months.

With promotion to the Premier League on the horizon at the conclusion of the season, the Whites require a balanced squad full of positive options.
