“One of the priorities” – Norwich City sign key player.

Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn faces an unclear future as his contract at Carrow Road expires at the end of the season.

Gunn played in the Norwich academy before joining Manchester City in 2011. However, he did not make any professional appearances at the Etihad Stadium and returned to Norfolk on loan for the 2017-18 season.

Gunn, who formerly played for Southampton and Stoke City, returned to Norwich for a cost of roughly £2.5 million in the summer of 2021. Despite initially struggling to replace Tim Krul, he has been the club’s number one goalkeeper for the past two seasons.

Angus Gunn’s stats during his second spell at Norwich City (according to Transfermarkt)
Season Division Appearances Clean sheets Goals conceded
2021-22 Premier League 11 2 25
2022-23 Championship 32 7 40
2023-24 Championship 43 14 52
2024-25 Championship 9 2 10

Gunn has performed well for Norwich in the opening stages of the season, but there are worries that he may be sidelined for some time after pulling out of the Scotland squad because of a muscle injury he suffered in the team’s 4-0 victory over Hull City just before the international break.

“He had a knock to his ribs after catching the ball, one of these crosses when he went out there, and you can see he was struggling a little bit,” head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup said to the Pink Un after the game, acknowledging that he was unsure of the severity of the issue. The 28-year-old was forced off the field at halftime of the team’s victory over the Tigers.

“I believe that it hurt him more. Naturally, we hope that nothing is damaged, but you never know. And at halftime, he realized he couldn’t go on.”

It’s unclear if the Canaries will try to come to a comparable arrangement with Gunn after they just signed second-choice goalkeeper George Long to a new three-year contract.

Norwich City fan pundit on Angus Gunn contract situation

Angus Gunn for Scotland

Zeke Downes, a Norwich City fan commentator for FLW, stated that the Canaries should prioritize guaranteeing the future of the Scotland international Gunn when asked if the team should offer him a new deal.

“I think one of the priorities that we need to be looking at is tying down Angus Gunn to another contract because the drop to George Long is massive,” Zeke stated.

“For whatever reason, Long has a fresh contract, so we are stuck with him.

“But Gunn is one of the finest keepers in the league, if not the best, and we’ve relied heavily on him over the last two to three years.

“He’s incredibly important in this new system; he makes a lot of saves, and he’s also excellent on the ball. He’s not great on the ball, but I’d rather he was better at shot-stopping anyhow.

“He’s still a very good age and we do need him to sign a new deal.”

Zeke’s suggestion that Norwich should negotiate with Gunn for a new deal is impossible to disagree with.

After initially battling to secure his spot in the team after rejoining the Canaries, Gunn has firmly established himself as first choice in recent years, and he has had a strong start to the season for Thorup’s side.

Gunn has previously been connected with Scottish giants Rangers. While his shaky performances during Euro 2024 this summer may dissuade Premier League clubs from making a move, he is expected to have plenty of interest as he reaches the final six months of his contract at Carrow Road.

Gunn has a deep relationship to the club and may be interested in extending his stay. However, the club needs to secure his contract soon to avoid losing him for free in the summer.
