Cleverley says Watford shape is more attacking than 4-3-3.
Following their four-goal defeat at the hands of Norwich in their most recent away Championship match, head coach Tom Cleverley declared he would want to strengthen his squad.
This was especially crucial in the beginning of games, as Watford had developed the bad habit of giving up goals early.
The Hornets defeated Sunderland by dominating their own final third after overcoming a goal behind early on to seem extremely strong against the Premier League champions away at Manchester City.
That was accomplished with no lessened desire to attack and only slight adjustments made to the strategy.
“It’s funny how in football, people can mistakenly believe that a back four is more offensive than a back five,” Cleverley observed.
“When you attack so well with wing backs, we’re actually attacking with more players than we would be if we were playing 4-3-3.
“In a 4-3-3, a lot of the time you attack with only three players.
We’re attacking with five players right now because we’re using two No. 10s, a No. 9, and two wing-backs.
It’s a common misconception that a defensive team plays a back three with two full backs serving as wing backs, however that is obviously untrue.
“How many numbers you’re getting into attacking areas is more interesting to me than how obsessed you are with systems.”

“I’ve been really happy with our attacking output overall, and I was again on Saturday.”
