Matt Hobbs reveals the strange backstory of Wolves’ incredible £40 million transfer.

Unbeknownst to many, one of Wolves’ most recent transfer success stories had an incredible beginning. When Wolverhampton Wanderers sold central defender Maximilian Kilman to West Ham United in the summer, they made an incredible profit of about forty million pounds. Although the full background isn’t nearly as widely known, most people know that the Old Gold only spent £40,000 to acquire Kilman’s services from Maidenhead United in 2018.

The current sporting director of Wolves, Matt Hobbs, has disclosed that the team first scouted Kilman long before the defender was at Maidenhead. Hobbs actually had a big part to play as Wolves observed Kilman participating in an altogether other sport. Hobbs caused a stir last week when he disclosed, “We saw Kilman playing futsal for England in Cardiff,” on BBC Radio 5 Live. For a player of his stature,

Then, I was a scout. A scout is able to recall names, and I noticed that he entered the non-league. After that, there was a charitable six-a-side competition; I’m not sure if Max even had a few beers at that point, but the next thing you knew, he was on trial.

Max Kilman was originally scouted by Wolves at an amateur futsal tournament, before Matt Hobbs went a step further to watch the defender at a charity event.
“Rob adored him from the beginning when he was our under-23 head coach, Rob Edwards. Because Rob spent so much effort into him, Rob was huge for Max. The rest is history; he made his major move this summer after coming in for forty thousand dollars from Maidenhead. If Hobbs hadn’t observed Kilman engaging in futsal, the defender might not have come to Wolves’ attention until it was too late. Kilman’s additional preparation for a charity function also cemented Hobbs’ interest in the center back, and the two watched each other frequently until Wanderers bought Kilman.

Hobbs chuckled, realizing the oddity of his initial discovery: “I should be clear, I don’t frequently scout at six-a-side matches when players are drinking! We do, however, pay close attention to non-league teams. We then give them enough time to succeed. Kilman finished his career with 151 professional appearances for Wolves before deciding to sign a lucrative contract to join West Ham in July.
