SWANSEA CITY AFC FOUNDATION TO LAUNCH WALKING FOOTBALL SESSIONS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARKINSON’S UK.
Walking football classes for people with Parkinson’s disease are being introduced by the Swansea City AFC Foundation, with funding
from Parkinson’s UK.
The Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre will host sessions on Mondays starting on October 14 to provide a social and physical exercise
environment for persons with Parkinson’s disease and those who support them.
The Swans Foundation’s walking football sessions are a part of a larger nationwide program in which Wrexham AFC Community Trust
is also involved. Parkinson’s UK is committed to giving people affected by the condition opportunities to interact with others and find
accessible physical activity throughout Wales.
Due to their symptoms, people with neurological diseases like Parkinson’s frequently have little opportunities to exercise. They also
frequently feel unwilling to participate in conventional fitness programs because of their physical limitations or their fear of being
different from others.
In addition to allowing participants to participate at their own pace, these new sessions will include a support group component that
will enable participants to engage with others and talk about similar experiences.
Following each session, participants will have the opportunity to speak with other individuals facing comparable challenges at the café
at Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre, where they will be joined by trainers from the Foundation and other participants.
Beginning on October 14, sessions will be held every week from 3 to 4 p.m. and are tailored to the needs of each individual adult
participant, regardless of ability.
“At Swansea City AFC Foundation, we strive to be inclusive for everyone in our local community, and this latest addition to our range
of programs only grows that,” stated Caroline Gwilym, head of health and wellbeing at the organization.
Walking football is an amazing initiative that has aided a great number of people in finding an accessible means of engaging in
physical activity and socializing. We believe that those with Parkinson’s disease would greatly benefit from this.
“These sessions will enable individuals to engage in physical activity alongside peers in a nonjudgmental setting, enabling them to feel
at ease while participating in sports.”
“We hope that these sessions will have a significant impact on our local community, and we would like to express our gratitude to
Parkinson’s UK for making this possible.”
