‘Celtic fans tend to…’ What they said in America about Cameron Carter-Vickers’ own goal
Celtic managed to rescue a point during a frustrating Champions League game against Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
On a positive note, Brendan Rodgers’ side are yet to be beaten at home in Europe, so that’s something that might stand the team in good stead going forward.
But Celtic didn’t help themselves against Brugge, who were by far the better team during the opening 45 minutes, before they were handed the gift of all gifts.
There are many fans – of any club – in today’s game that simply don’t like this new phenomenon of playing out from the back.
And Cameron Carter-Vickers’ own goal was a prime example of that because it was a nightmare moment for the player.
Celtic weren’t at the races as it is and they were on the edge of conceding, before they handed a goal on a plate to their opponents when their main centre-back just rolled the ball into his own net as a helpless Kasper Schmeichel looked on.
Back in Carter-Vickers’ homeland, pundits in America on ESPN shared their thoughts on the matter.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop spoke about how he has never conceded a goal like that in his career.
Hislop feels that players should change how they pass out from the back and ‘don’t pass it in between the sticks’ but ‘pass it back wide’ instead, so that way, if an error is made, then you can rectify it at that moment.
Craig Burley was more sarcastic in his response and he claimed that ‘Celtic fans tend to take those things quite well’ from his days of playing at the club.
“No, I don’t think I have ever (conceded a goal like that),” shared former keeper Hislop. “Kasper Schmeichel goes to give Carter-Vickers, and whoever the right-back was, an angle to pass it back if he wanted.
“I would say, don’t pass it back in between the sticks. Pass it back wide. But you can always run onto that.”
Burley then sarcastically chirped in: “The good news is for Carter-Vickers is that, in my experience, the Celtic fans tend to take those things quite well – but it’s one of those things for Carter-Vickers, you look up and you go ‘ohhh’.”

This is just a blip and Rodgers is the right man to have in the dugout because he will brush all of this off and allow the players to go again.
Time will tell if this is a point gained or two points dropped, but Carter-Vickers will be producing those top performances again.
WhoScored rated his performance at 6.53, which is pretty healthy given that it includes a little downgrade for the own goal.
