Xherdan Shaqiri catching fire in Switzerland
Leading Basel, his local team, in their attempt to win the Swiss championship for the first time since 2017 is Xherdan
Shaqiri, who is enjoying life back there.
He scored a straight free-kick as part of his hat-trick in yesterday night’s 3-1 victory over Servette. He has now helped
the team score 11 goals in the last five games, including five goals himself and six assists.
Sport report: “Shaq Attack is presently demonstrating to all of his detractors that he is a superb Swiss football
player.” He controls the Super League and plays a major role in making it possible for Basel to at last have a realistic
chance of winning the Swiss title once more.
He is now on track to break a record set by Miroslav Stevanovic, a playmaker for Servette. The Bosnian set a new
assist record during the 2021–2022 season. The Servette standout at the time recorded an incredible 20 assists in 34
games. For Shaqiri in his current shape, this mark is anything but ideal. After all, the veteran would have 21 or 22
assists if he added up his seven assists across 38 match days.
Since leaving Stoke in 2018, Shaqiri has been on a trip, helping Liverpool win the Premier League and Champions
League before moving to Chicago Fire via Lyon and returning to Switzerland in August.
He said: “I really wanted to come home. When you’re at home you can surpass yourself. That’s the case for me at the
moment and I’m just having a lot of fun playing football again.”
Susie Dent gets a lesson on the Stoke badge
There has been talk lately about the Stoke City badge and potential changes, which are set to be discussed and
debated with supporters next year.
And the beloved and intricate old crest, which incorporated the City of Stoke-on-Trent coat of arms, got a mention
on Radio 4 this week as Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt, with guest Susie Dent borrowed from Countdown’s Dictionary
Corner, trying to find a link between Ipswich Town and the dromedary camel on their new show Route Masters.
We can’t quibble at Stoke being talked about any which way on national radio or TV during these years outside the
Premier League spotlight and it was great research from Dennis to bring it up in the first place – but, Hugh, it’s six
towns not five, it’s definitely a Dromedary camel (which has one hump) and not Bactrian (which has two), and
anyone who has the cheek to say it was badly drawn hasn’t tried to draw it on a school exercise book.
“I decided to check if there were any football clubs with camels in their badges – and there is one; Stoke City,” he
said to Dent and Punt. There is a camel in one of the four quarters of an old Stoke City badge. This seems to be there
to honor one of the five [sic] towns, Hanley. Since Hanley is obviously in the Potteries, it was placed there to
represent the origins of pottery.
“So, yes, I discovered that the town of Stoke and Stoke City presumably had a camel on their badge, but to be honest,
it’s a really poorly drawn camel, and it’s unclear if it has one or two humps, so I took a different route instead.”
