Due to what the Owls said as “a temporary issue and a consequence of significant and as yet unpaid sums of money
owed to the chairman [Dejphon Chansiri] which has impacted on the club’s immediate cashflow,” the Football
League has placed the team under embargo.
“We expect this situation to be finalized imminently, at which point the embargo will be lifted,” the statement
continued.
Thankfully, manager Rohl made it clear in the run-up to today’s Championship match against Watford that he had
no intention of following in the footsteps of Leeds United, Hull City, and Bradford City last month by expanding the
team with a free agency addition that was subject to transfer window regulations.
There were some strange faces in the back three for Tuesday’s 1-1 League Cup match because Akin Famewo is
anticipated to be out for “months” following scans on the muscle damage he sustained at Portsmouth last week and
Michael Ihiekwe is almost ready to return from his Achilles issue but is not yet there.
Rohl was reassured by wing-back Max Lowe and center-back Gabriel Otegbayo, who was making his second senior
appearance.
“We played with Max in the center-half position, and he played well, and we played with Gab,” Rohl stated. “After
Tuesday, I have two more options.” This indicates that other players are capable of filling this role.
Although it’s difficult for Akin, it provides me two additional choices, which is incredibly unfortunate.
“When you start with three players and then add the next three big guys, you don’t feel like you’re dropping down [a
level], which is a huge strength of the squad.”
“With these athletes, regardless of who they are, we can have an effect.
Despite having a solid stint on the left of defense under Darren Moore, Lowe was selected to play there instead of
fellow wing-back Marvin Johnson, who was retained in his typical position for the cup match.
“Max and Marvin had a great relationship; it was their first time playing together in this setting,” Rohl remarked. It
was pleasing to observe.
“The most crucial thing to remember is that when you have a left foot, you have several angles growing up.
“Max is composed when handling the ball, and I believe he made some excellent passes, such as the one that led to
the goal against West Brom.” We also have strong choices with a right footer; we just need to know which spots to
exploit.
Even the best teams occasionally have right-footers there, but building up with the left foot is beneficial. Having
more players who can play in the back three is more important to me because you can also utilize them as a left-back
hybrid. We have the option to switch throughout a game and that on both sides.
Rohl commented, “Icky looks good, I think he will make the next step now on the grass,” on Ihiekwe’s development.
After Akin’s injury, we are aware that we need him. We know that the schedule in November and December is just as
busy, so it’s critical that he returns as soon as possible.
