Despite just losing 1-0 to Manchester City in their most recent match, Southampton has had a terrible start to the season and has only picked up one point out of a possible 27.
Although they are at the bottom of the table, there is hope that their fortunes will improve in the league even though the Saints have secured a spot in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Russell Martin’s team takes on Everton, who have improved recently. Sean Dyche’s team has gone five games without a loss, pulling them five points clear of the bottom three.
When Tottenham Hotspur FC and Arsenal FC played in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September, Sky Sports commentator Paul Merson was there.
Paul Merson shares Southampton vs Everton score prediction
Martin’s future in the dugout could be determined by the outcome of the next two games, as Southampton hosts the Toffees and then travels to Wolves, who are one point and one spot higher in the standings.
They are currently five points outside of safety, and the distance between them and exiting the relegation zone grows with each week that goes by without a victory.
Despite the fact that it would jeopardize their chances of survival, the players still adore Martin and want him to stay manager, despite what the table indicates.
Paul Merson, a former forward for Arsenal, criticized the Saints prior to the relegation six-pointer at St Marys but commended Everton for their recent form surge.
Even though he didn’t mention anything encouraging about Southampton in his Sportskeeda preview, he has shockingly picked the home team to win by a huge 2-1 margin.
Merson wrote, “Everton will understand exactly how Southampton will want to play against them.” Sean Dyche will have a strategy in place, and the Saints will aim to play out from the back and take a ton of opportunities.
“Everton is on a bit of a good run and is currently five games undefeated. They’ll put pressure on Southampton, and I think it won’t be long before Everton gets the ball and scores. Southampton and Ipswich will have gone 20 league games without a victory if they lose this weekend. There is no doubt that these teams are having problems.
Southampton vs Everton head-to-head record
This is the most important match Southampton has played so far this season since a victory would put the visitors 11 points ahead of the Saints, while a victory at home would reduce that difference to just five points.
While 11 points might be insurmountable in their struggle for survival and with a challenging schedule ahead, the five-point gap provides them hope going into their trip to Molineux.
Anything less than three points is obviously unacceptable for Southampton in particular, and fortunately, their recent performance against the Toffees is entertaining.
Including a recent penalty shootout victory in the Carabao Cup match in September, the South Coasters have defeated the Merseysiders in three of their past four meetings.
It will be a long road back for Martin unless he can summon some magic and secure a valuable three points this weekend.
