There has been no shortage of physicality in the NHL this week, and the Boston Bruins — past and present — are no exception.
Jeremy Lauzon, a former Bruins defenseman, answered the bell late Thursday night in the Nashville Predators’ unsightly 5-1 loss to Edmonton. Lauzon got tangled up with Edmonton winger Vasily Podkolzin early in the third period, and the two exchanged blows.
That proved to be a disastrous decision for Lauzon, who received a powerful right punch from Podkolzin, knocking him to the ice and leaving the 27-year-old bloodied.
Lauzon deserves credit for taking the dance, but he is hardly a pugilist. He had just one fighting major last season for the Predators, and he only fought twice in his three seasons with the Black and Gold. Podkolzin, a former top-10 choice, is also not known for his fighting abilities. Coincidentally, his only other NHL fight came nearly two years later, at TD Garden in Boston, against then-Bruins winger A.J. Greer, while still with Vancouver.
The brawl added salt to injury for Lauzon, who was on the ice for two of the Oilers’ five goals, with the Predators being outshot 11-5 in the blueliner’s 15:04 for the night.
Lauzon deserves credit, however: despite being cut during the brawl, he remained in the game and skated three shifts before the merciful final horn.
