One Championship manager has expressed his previous interest in a Sheffield Wednesday star.
Sheffield Wednesday will meet Watford at Hillsborough Stadium, as Danny Rohl’s side looks to build on their strong performance in the EFL Cup against Brentford, in which the Owls were eliminated on penalties.
While excitement has been quite high in and around S6, recent rumors of a transfer embargo has tempered that, and it is possible that Rohl’s transfer plans will be affected come January.
Sheffield Wednesday were already unlikely to spend heavily in the upcoming transfer window, but the latest news might substantially impede any additions, but it appears that the ban will only be placed on the Owls temporarily.
As a result, they may change their stance on exiting players, and Rohl is likely to wish to keep players who can’t be replaced, including one in whom a Championship manager expressed interest last season.
Derby County boss reveals interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker
Last January, Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl took his first moves in the transfer market by acquiring his own players, one of whom was Ike Ugbo on loan, demonstrating a clear desire to bolster his front line.
The Canadian quickly became Rohl’s preferred option, although he has struggled since his permanent arrival this summer.
Michael Smith is the only striker at Sheffield Wednesday who hasn’t arguably disappointed this season, and Rohl will be delighted he kept him in prior transfer windows.
Smith was a hot property for League One club Wrexham in the summer, and Derby County manager Paul Warne has revealed that the Rams were also interested in him during the 2023/24 season, as reported by Dominic Dietrich on X: “In every window he [Smith] has been up for discussion.”
“Last January, I spoke with the Wednesday manager, and he didn’t want to loan him out. At the time, he is not someone I want to bring in.”
Danny Rohl will be glad he hung on to Michael Smith for Sheffield Wednesday
While Derby County’s mooted deal was a loan, it is evident that it would have cast doubt on his future in the Steel City.
Now that it is evident that neither Ugbo nor Jamal Lowe have lived up to their expectations in the Championship, Rohl will be grateful that he persevered with Smith at Sheffield Wednesday.
After a recent critical goal against Portsmouth, there is no doubt that he deserves a run of games leading the line, and the Owls would undoubtedly be fighting for their survival in the Championship if he had not done what he did.
