Bristol City deputy head coach Chris Hogg has a lot of respect for Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom.
PNE’s next Championship challenge comes against the Robins, who return to home territory this weekend. North End are seeking to rebound from Wednesday night’s 0-3 loss to Arsenal and return to winning ways in the Championship. Preston threw away a three-nil lead against Plymouth Argyle last Saturday, conceding in the 92nd minute.
Next, they host a team that is currently ranked 11th in the table. Bristol City are unbeaten in their last seven games, with five draws. Last Saturday, the Robins welcomed head coach Liam Manning back to the dugout following his hiatus. His assistant, Hogg, continues to conduct news conferences, and he is well aware of the struggle that awaits him on Saturday.
“Preston’s always been a tough place to go,” Hogg told me. “Paul Heckingbottom has done an excellent job wherever he has been, and he is a manager I greatly admire. They are on a good run, and based on how they play, I believe they will be very aggressive. This applies to any Paul Heckingbottom squad.
“He motivates them and keeps them organized and structured because he is an excellent coach. The challenge for us is to go and meet whatever physical challenges there are. But then it’s about having the courage and quality to go and damage them, to put them in positions and situations that make them uncomfortable.”
He continued, “We have to maintain the attributes we’ve shown over the last few weeks and throughout the season of being difficult to beat. Over the last 10 days, we’ve seen three different types of performances. You have to play many ways at times to get outcomes in games, and the good news for us is that we’ve demonstrated that at this point in the season, over these ten, twelve games, we can do it all.”
