Manchester United are on the verge of announcing Ruben Amorim as their next manager, after the 39-year-old excelled while at Sporting Lisbon.

Ruben Amorim has been seen as the ideal candidate to run Manchester United.

Amorim is poised to succeed Erik ten Hag, who was fired on Monday after a poor start to the season. Ten Hag suffered the price after winning only four games throughout all competitions this season.

United are close to announcing Amorim as his permanent replacement, with Ruud van Nistelrooy retaining in charge until the forthcoming international break. In his four years in command of Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese manager has guided the club to two Primeira Liga titles.

He overcame a 19-year championship drought in his first full season as Sporting manager. Former Aston Villa player Gabby Agbonlahor, who completed his coaching badges with Amorim, believes the 39-year-old is the ideal fit for United.

“I completed my coaching badges with him. You conduct your own sessions since you need to pass the badges. But he was one of the ones that was there, and you could see he was so into it that he wanted to obtain his badges before going and starting to manage,” he told talkSPORT.

“It isn’t as simple as people assume. You put on several sessions. The first one I scheduled was a crossing and finishing session, followed by a keep ball session and a shooting session. He was quite attentive.

“Since the start of last season, Sporting Lisbon has scored the most goals among the top six divisions. They had been waiting 19 years for a title before he went there, and they have won two in the previous five seasons.

“I just think when you look at what he’s done since leaving Braga to Sporting Lisbon, winning their first title in 19 years, Manchester United have got the right man.”
