Borja Sainz has been an absolute revelation for Norwich City since his arrival in 2023. The Spanish winger has taken the Championship by storm this campaign, and will undoubtedly have plenty of admirers heading into January.
The 23-year-old has had an incredible start to the season, contributing a goal in each of his first 12 games with ten
goals and two assists. With 22 goals scored thus far this season, the Canaries have dominated, and Sainz has played a
key role in that success.
The Spaniard would undoubtedly be a crucial asset in a possible fight for promotion, therefore any plans to trade
him during the next winter transfer window should be put on hold.
Sainz can help Norwich’s promotion push
Last summer, the teenage attacker joined the East Anglian team after joining from Giresunspor in Turkey. Despite
having a solid debut season with six goals and two assists, Sainz’s team really came into his own during the 2024–25
season.
A new era at Carrow Road has begun, and it is evident that the team is aiming for its first Premier League comeback
since 2022 thanks to Mark Attansio’s ongoing investment in the team and the hiring of the dynamic Johannes Hoff
Thorup.
Norwich is in somewhat unknown territory, particularly in recent years, as fierce rivals Ipswich Town earned a berth
in the Premier League by winning back-to-back promotions. Norwich hasn’t been accustomed to being the second-
best team in East Anglia lately, so the Canaries will be eager to defeat their opponents.
Even though the season is still extremely early, Sainz has been playing quite well. Only league leaders Sunderland
have scored more goals than Norwich, thus their goal total is undoubtedly indicative of a team that is in the running
for promotion. But since Sainz has contributed to 12 of City’s 22 goals thus far, depending too much on the Spaniard
can backfire if the board decides to cash in on their star in January.
The Canaries’ defensive record is costing them wins
Looking at Norwich’s season thus far, the 23-year-old’s services have been responsible for a great number of goals.
Finding someone in the middle of the season who could match the caliber of play Sainz is displaying right now would
be nearly impossible.
With just two losses in their first twelve games, the Canaries are a formidable opponent. But if they wish to enter the
automatic promotion hunt, they need to start converting draws into victories. With a run of impressive
performances, City could easily overtake Burnley, who are currently in second position, by just five points.
However, Norwich has had terrible defensive play, giving up 16 goals. This figure is insufficient to even consider the
Canaries for promotion when compared to their promotion opponents. Thorup’s team needs to convert one point
into three in order to continue, but the amount of goals they’re giving up is keeping them from doing so.
The Danish manager will be concerned about this record because, while his team can compete at the sharp end in
terms of scoring, they are far less at ease at the back, particularly in the previous three games when they have given
up an average of two goals per game.
Norwich shouldn’t even consider Sainz sale
The Canaries need to hang onto Sainz throughout the January transfer window, as was previously mentioned.
Higher tier teams will undoubtedly be interested in the winger during the transfer season; Athletic Bilbao, a La Liga
team, was connected to him in the summer and the player is allegedly open to joining them. However, the board
must not be influenced by any offers that are made.
Offers might come in, but if Sainz’s explosive form continues, the board needs to consider the wider picture. They
may have a good chance of being promoted this season because to the goals and opportunities the former Zaragoza
player gives the team. Sainz will undoubtedly be the one to contribute those moments of individual genius, which can
truly make a difference.
Nothing will stop City from racing towards the top two in the second half of the season if Sainz is kept in January and
they bolster their defense. The board needs to realize that they will have a far better chance of returning to the
Premier League if they can hold onto their emerging star and that they will probably be able to charge more in the
future.
If the Yellows don’t get promoted, the winger might be free to leave in the summer. But it’s crucial for their hopes
this season that they keep their star until at least the summer and don’t do the unimaginable.
