Construction of landmark Glasgow tower enters first phase

Emergency services were dispatched to the Dunfermline Recycling Centre about 4.30pm on October 30 after receiving reports of a man being hurt on the premises.

Plans to erect Glasgow’s tallest building have made significant progress.

JR Scaffold prepped the Portcullis House for partial demolition by installing approximately 2000 square meters of scaffolding and 500 linear meters of edge protection.

Putnam Construction, the demolition business, assigned the project to the scaffolding firm.

Once Portcullis House is completed, the India Street construction will be the highest building in the country, with 784 beds for students.

A crew of three scaffold operatives constructed the scaffolding, which is part of the initial phase of work and will remain atop the building until the new structure takes shape.

Alistair McKay, contracts supervisor for JR Scaffold, stated: “This was a tough job for our team because we had to overcome some design aspects due to the scaffolding’s close proximity to other buildings in this busy city centre area.

“We also had to consult engineers about wind loads once the façade was destroyed because the remaining concrete frame is now entirely exposed to the elements.

“This will be a truly iconic residential building upon completion, instantly recognisable in the city’s skyline and from the neighbouring M8 and we are proud to have played a part in bringing it to life.”

Plans to construct the tallest building in Glasgow take big step forward

Watkin Jones is converting the former HMRC building, which will be 36 stories tall.

Previously, a planning authority stated that the Glasgow Science Centre tower is the tallest structure.

The tower, known as ‘The Ard’, is expected to reach a height of 114m, compared to the Science Centre’s 127m.

Watkin Jones Group, the scheme’s developers, originally stated that the project will solve “a well-recognised undersupply of student accommodation” in the city.

The facility will include student housing, a games area, gym, kitchen, art studio, commercial space and a new office for the organisation Glasgow Social Enterprise Network.

The design will combine elements of the existing Portcullis House, which was constructed in the 1970s.

It was most recently used by HMRC, but has been vacant since 2020.
