Burnley FC supporters cannot forget this Vincent Kompany factor amid Scott Parker criticism
Burnley manager Scott Parker has come under heavy fire from certain supporters who feel they haven’t performed well enough in the Championship due to a string of mistakes.
Although the Clarets’ recent draws with Oxford, Preston, Hull, and QPR are disheartening, they are still in second place in the league and in a strong position to make a serious run at returning to the Premier League at the first attempt.
Parker’s start as Burnley boss has been difficult; he has had to cope with a plethora of departures during the summer, and Burnley supporters’ analogies to the conclusion of Vincent Kompany’s 2022–2023 championship season haven’t helped either.
Even while the campaign was amazing for Burnley fans, you get the impression that it set a standard so high that many fans think it happens frequently, even if it doesn’t.
Burnley’s 101 point season marks the Clarets out as the only side to break the century barrier in the second tier since Leicester did so in 2013/14, so that shows just how rare a season like the one they put together is.
Parker has out-performed Kompany in his first 12 games
Despite all the analogies to the end of the 2022–2023 season, when Burnley had a strong team and significant momentum, the league tables show that Kompany’s first 12 games were actually poorer than Parker’s.
In Kompany’s first 12 games as manager, the Clarets have only managed 21 points, compared to Parker’s 23.
Burnley isn’t quite as free-scoring at one end, but they’re considerably more reliable at the other. Kompany’s club had only scored two more goals than the current Burnley team, but they had also given up six more goals.
Parker v Kompany comparison first 12 games (Transfermarkt) | ||
---|---|---|
Parker | Kompany | |
Wins | 6 | 5 |
Draws | 5 | 6 |
Losses | 1 | 1 |
Goals scored | 17 | 19 |
Goals conceded | 5 | 11 |
League position | 2nd | 3rd |
The Burnley supporters gave Kompany time to figure out that winning recipe more consistently, and their patience was rewarded later in the season when promotion was certain, picking up ten straight victories in the process.
Despite having two promotions listed on his resume, Parker doesn’t appear to be receiving the same treatment, which is a little disheartening.
Scoring goals is Burnley’s kryptonite under Parker
The fact that Josh Brownhill, a midfielder, is Burnley’s leading scorer this season speaks everything about their current difficulties.
The only strikers Burnley has left after Lyle Foster’s injury is either Jay Rodriguez or Andreas Hountondji, and the fact that neither is selected while Zian Flemming plays out of position speaks everything about Parker’s opinion of them.
Since rattling in nine goals in their opening two league games, Burnley have only scored eight since.
However, it’s important to note that Burnley fans have witnessed firsthand evidence that the problem can be resolved as they scored eight goals in two games against Wigan and Blackpool in Kompany’s first 12 games, compared to just 11 goals in the remaining ten.
The addition of a striker in January will likely determine if Parker can improve it, but in the interim, he must address an attacking issue that has seen only Plymouth Argyle (11) generate less good opportunities than Burnley this season (16).
