St Mirren SHOULD have had a penalty vs Rangers, says Stewart.
During Sunday’s match against Rangers, St Mirren ought to have been given a penalty.
Michael Stewart, a pundit, holds that opinion.
Yesterday afternoon’s Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox ended with Philippe Clement’s team winning 2-1.
Vaclav Cerny gave the Light Blues all three points by maintaining his excellent play from Thursday night.
But when Alex Gogic cancelled out Mohamed Diomande’s early opener, St Mirren’s requests for a penalty were dismissed by the referees with the score tied at one in the second half.
Following what appeared to be a trip by Gers defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo, striker Toyosi Olusanya went down inside the area.
Referee Calum Scott, however, chose to stop play because Nicolas Raskin had fouled Greg Kiltie just outside the box.
Instead of advising an on-field review at the pitchside monitor, VAR’s Greg Atiken chose not to intervene.
Stewart, who appeared on BBC’s Sportscene, feels that the Buddies should have received a spot kick.
The former Hearts and Hibs midfielder stated: “A close-up from low behind shows Kasanwirjo catching Olusanya as he is spinning, but the contact is not immediately apparent.
Additionally, it is a foul when you are knocked off while spinning. That should have been a penalty kick because it throws him off balance.
The flashpoint after the game did not impress Stephen Robinson.
“I don’t believe that any decision went in our direction,” he stated.
“I’ve asked for their explanations, something I don’t typically do. They were explained to me, but it doesn’t really matter if I agree with them or not.
“In the first half, we had two outstanding opportunities, and there may have been a penalty as well. I have to believe that VAR has it correct because the referee said that it wasn’t.
