BBC NEWS; Philippe Clement’s ‘excuse’ doesn’t wash with Rangers fans as Thelin’s Aberdeen revolution blows claim out the water.
The Belgian made a comment following his side’s win over St Mirren which fans have been quick to pick up on.
Philippe Clement was chastised for referring to Rangers as a “work in progress.”
After Rangers battled to a 2-1 victory over St Mirren, the manager argued it takes time for his “new” players to click. However, fans were quick to highlight to next opponents Aberdeen’s flying start under new manager Jimmy Thelin, who implemented similar alterations. The Belgian cited the Light Blues’ 2-1 win over the Buddies, where they started with seven summer arrivals. Vaclav Cerny, on loan from Wolfsburg, scored the winning goal at Ibrox.
Cerny, along with loanees Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Robin Propper, Jefte, Connor Barron, Nedim Bajrami, and Hamza Igamane, were among the seven new starters. However, after some changes with his squad toiling, Rangers finished the game with only three of the new guys remaining on the field.
Twenty-four hours earlier, Aberdeen concluded their game with one MORE summer signing, securing a late victory against Dundee United to maintain their unblemished start to the season and take the Scottish Premiership lead until Celtic overtook them on Sunday.
However, based on Clement’s statement, they did start the game with two fewer new lads, totaling five – the same amount as the previous week when they held champions Celtic to a draw at home.
However, some gamblers have jumped on the Rangers manager’s assertion, pointing out that the Ibrox boss has been in charge for a year, with Thelin just formally starting at Pittodrie a little less than five months ago, and he has six more points. Add in the fact that four of Rangers’ acquisitions cost a total of about £7 million, including the two loan players.
