Sheffield Wednesday boss bemoans ‘never-ending story’ despite defensive improvements

Danny Röhl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, is happy with his team’s defensive gains but is aware that they still need to take the “final step.”

There is something to be said for the Owls’ defensive performance in recent games, including this one, even though some would naturally concentrate on the lack of goals scored in their rather bland encounter against Swansea City on Tuesday night, which ended in a 0-0 tie at Hillsborough.

Röhl is pleased to see Wednesday doing the fundamentals well in that area of their game, saying, “We are very compact, we work with each other, we are connected and work hard. The focus and the mindset to defend is right, we have clean sheets and they are good steps.” Wednesday maintained two clean sheets in their last four games and, in contrast to the early parts of the season, have looked much more solid at the back, especially when it comes to defending set pieces.

“They put forth a lot of effort when they have two sixes up front, and our pressing front can handle the wingers and strikers. Jamal gave us a huge opportunity, and we discussed at halftime that we must cover; if we overplay, we will shut the net, be in the net, and create possibilities. It was all right.

“Be patient, carry the ball, but once more, we need the last step.” This is a never-ending saga, so perhaps that one was a foul. Although I’m happy today, I’m a little let down because we lost the chance to advance in the standings and score points.

When Wednesday makes the lengthy journey down to Fratton Park tomorrow evening, they will face yet another obstacle.
