When the Liverpool legend played a cheeky practical joke on Schmeichel during CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage, Jamie Carragher gave the order.
As Celtic traveled to Italy for a Champions League matchup against Atalanta, Schmeichel’s son, Kasper, was playing in goal.
The Hoops headed into the contest with one victory and one loss from their opening European games while Atalanta hoped to remain unblemished.
Schmeichel senior watched Celtic’s game on his phone even though he wasn’t there to witness his son because he was out on media for CBS.
Schmeichel, however, looked away from his phone to speak down the camera during a quick encounter with the main desk.
Carragher thought it would be a good time to play a practical joke on the legendary Manchester United player.
Carragher, “Peter, Peter, 1-0 Atalanta,”
Schmeichel’s eyes instantly went back to his phone when he heard Carragher, but the score was still 0-0.
He said, “You are kidding me,” Schmeichel.
“Is that correct? Why do you do such things?
Carragher attempted to use a well-known quote from renowned Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough to defend his practical joke.
“I just saw Peter that you’d actually stopped watching your phone,” stated Carragher.
“You can’t look away from the game at all. As Brian Clough famously stated, “It only takes a second to score a goal.” “That’s very, very true, but how do you know I stopped?” Schmeichel retorted.
Carragher clapped cheekily back: “Actually, you’re right. Normally, I wouldn’t watch your interviews.
Celtic managed to hold out for a thrilling 0-0 draw against the Europa League winners from the previous season, even though Atalanta had 67 percent of the possession and had scored 22 goals.
As Atalanta became the second club since 2008 to have more than 20 shots and 50 touches in the opposition box yet not score, Schmeichel helped Celtic maintain their clean sheet.
