Sunderland is not necessarily your second favorite team if you have been a black-and-white fan from birth until old age. They don’t rank at all, actually.

But because of the work I’ve had for decades, I’ve made an exception for some people who, in spite of their color scheme, have become close friends.

I’ve had several conversations with men like Dennis Tueart, Ian Porterfield, Billy Hughes, Jimmy Montgomery, Peter Reid, Don Goodman, Denis Smith, and Malcolm Crosby while attempting to expose their foolishness.

Another is Marco Gabbiadini, who used to frequently share a stage with me during talk-ins that included a Sunderland and Newcastle player simultaneously. Sometimes it became lively!

In any case, the reason I bring it up is that Gabbers, who is only 56 years old, is scheduled to have a triple heart bypass within the next 24 hours. He was their SuperMac; he was incredibly fast, had a fierce shot, and a large personality. Before he sold it, I had stayed at his guest house in York several times. I also followed him on BBC Radio Newcastle, where he discusses Sunderland every night with another friend, John Anderson, who presents the NUFC viewpoint.

I sincerely hope Gabbers has the greatest possible outcome. He’s a very kind person for a Mackem!
