‘He hasn’t hit the ground running’: John Hartson questions why Celtic paid big bucks for summer signing

Many fans got their desire this summer when Celtic signed Adam Idah on a permanent basis.

The Republic of Ireland international joined Celtic on a six-month loan from Norwich City in January and quickly established himself as a fan favourite.

Idah scored the winner against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final, among many other key goals, and there was a rush to sign him.

Hyeongyu Oh was Celtic’s backup striker at the time, but he didn’t add much to the team’s performance and was eventually transferred to Genk.

The Bhoys brought in Idah to add quality to the bench and challenge Kyogo Furuhashi, which was understandable.

But fast forward to the present, and doubts are beginning to sneak in, despite the fact that it is still early in the season and there are many big games ahead.

John Hartson questions Adam Idah’s Celtic transfer

A Celtic fan called Go Radio and expressed dissatisfaction with Idah as a player and the club’s decision to sign him this summer.

John Hartson was on hand to listen to the call, and he agreed with that position and was quite harsh in his own decision.

Idah has been selected to play against Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night, so he has plenty of opportunities to prove his doubters wrong.

However, Hartson questioned who else Celtic could have brought in instead of Idah because ‘he hasn’t hit the ground running’.

It needs to be noted that he didn’t have a pre-season with the champions and has since played second fiddle to Kyogo, so that doesn’t help matters.

“I don’t know how many were on Celtic’s shopping list, I have to be honest with you,” Hartson told the reporter.

“But they targeted Adam Idah. I believe we were all impressed, rather than sucked in, last season. I believe he made 19 appearances, the majority of which came off the bench, and he was happy to score the winning goal in the cup final against Rangers. He created a huge hero of himself. He made a big name for himself. By the way, I scored some key goals in the run-in.

“He hasn’t struck the ground running. One of the reasons is that it is quite difficult to remove Kyogo. When you feel like you’re the next guy in and not the number one striker, it might cause a loss of confidence and make you think, “The manager isn’t putting me in this week,” in terms of being the main number nine. I believe that can occasionally undermine your confidence. I’m not going to judge him too harshly, but I’m not sure who else Celtic had their sights on last season. He cost £9 million. Many admirers could simply remark, “Well.” Could we have got a better one? One of the reasons why Celtic took him is because he did

Adam Idah’s Celtic stats

Perhaps Idah needs a spark from someplace, one game-changing performance, or a big goal, and everything will change.

Celtic have a big game against Atalanta coming up, which would be an excellent opportunity for him to demonstrate his worth.

However, he has yet to truly get going, with WhoScored ranking his Champions League and Premier League efforts thus far as 6.42 and 6.40, respectively.
