Forgotten PSL Midfielder Phumlani Ntshangase Regrets Snubbing Orlando Pirates
Former South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) midfielder Phumlani Ntshangase has opened up about one of the biggest regrets of his career: turning down a move to Orlando Pirates. Once regarded as one of the most promising talents in South African football, Ntshangase’s career has taken an unexpected turn, and he now reflects on a missed opportunity that could have changed the trajectory of his playing days.
In a recent interview, Ntshangase revealed that he had the chance to join Orlando Pirates at the peak of his career but chose to pursue a different path. “It was a difficult decision at the time, and looking back now, I regret not taking the opportunity. Pirates are one of the biggest clubs in Africa, and playing for them could have taken my career to another level,” Ntshangase admitted.
The midfielder, known for his excellent ball control and vision, was highly sought after during his time at Bidvest Wits, where he impressed with his performances in midfield. However, despite interest from Pirates and other major clubs in the PSL, Ntshangase opted to stay at Wits before eventually moving to Maritzburg United. Unfortunately, his time at Maritzburg did not go as planned, with injuries and inconsistent form derailing his progress.
Now out of the spotlight and without a club, Ntshangase reflects on how different things could have been had he made the switch to the Buccaneers. “Orlando Pirates is a club with a rich history, and playing there could have opened doors for me internationally as well. I believe I could have achieved much more if I had made the move,” he lamented.
Ntshangase’s story is a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football. Once considered a future star, his career has been marred by injuries and missed opportunities. Despite his regrets, the 29-year-old midfielder remains hopeful of resurrecting his career and finding a new club where he can showcase his talents once more.
“Football is full of ups and downs, and I’ve learned a lot from my journey. I still have the passion and hunger to play at the highest level, and I’m working hard to get back on the field. I believe I still have something to offer,” Ntshangase said.
As he reflects on his past decisions, Ntshangase’s story serves as a cautionary tale for young footballers about the importance of timing and making the right career choices. Whether he can reignite his career remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Phumlani Ntshangase will always wonder what could have been if he had donned the famous black and white of Orlando Pirates.
