Ethan Ryan, a former back for Hull Kingston Rovers, said that after playing for Australians, he is “finally playing rugby with a smile back” under an English coach.

From 2020 until 2023, Ryan played for Hull KR under Australian head coaches Willie Peters and Tony Smith. This year, the player joined the Salford Red Devils, who are coached by Paul Rowley, an Englishman.

Ryan told the Salford Red Devils’ official media during a season review: “I haven’t had an English coach in a long time. It was a little different from what I was used to, especially during my time in the Super League, because I have had Australian coaches for the past few years.

However, I’m glad to report that I’m playing rugby with a grin on my face at last.

“He has a lot of trust in us as players and everybody is sort of on the same page here and I’ve really enjoyed my time under him in my first year.”

In 2024, Ryan had 22 appearances, contributing five try assists and six tries himself. “I pride myself on the little efforts that probably go unnoticed sometimes,” he added, speaking generally about his efforts.
