IBC: Agreement in Place For 3,635m² Behind Cobbold Stand

According to Ipswich Borough Council (IBC), the town has a “in-principle agreement” in place for about 3,635m² of land behind the current Cobbold Stand in anticipation of a future refurbishment.

With the replacement of the 53-year-old building a medium-to-long-term goal, Blues chairman and CEO Mark Ashton said on Saturday that the team had “agreed to buy the land behind the Cobbold Stand”.

The area in question extends well into the Portman Road parking lot in front of IBC’s aquatics facility expansion, whose plans were revealed earlier this year, according to a TWTD report over the weekend.

An IBC spokesperson confirmed: “The redevelopment of the Portman Road area is an exciting project and partnership between Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich Town Football Club.

“There is an in-principle agreement in place, though the specific terms are yet to be finalised.

A hotel, a multi-story parking structure, an aquatics complex, and a site set aside for the growth and development of Ipswich Town Football Club are all part of the extensive design work that is part of the Portman Road concept.

“The area in question is a crucial component of the masterplan and spans roughly 3,635m².”

It is acknowledged that the space will encompass both the cantilevered structure’s overhang and actual building.
