Former Arsenal star and current U-18s head coach Jack Wilshere agrees ‘exciting’ Norwich City move

Jack Wilshere is leaving Arsenal this week to take up a coaching role at Norwich City.

Wilshere has been Arsenal Under-18s head coach since 2022, but the 32-year-old will move into a first-team position working under

Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Norwich have agreed a compensation package with Arsenal and Wilshere is due to start work at the Championship club on Thursday.

Wilshere feels the move should advance his coaching career.

Wilshere will start when the team return on Thursday after Norwich’s Tuesday match against Preston and Wednesday off.

Wilshere has met with Thorup and his team on a few occasions while at the Norwich training facility.

He is thrilled with the transfer, and Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper, a former Arsenal employee, helped the teams’ negotiations go well.

Wilshere started his role with Arsenal Under-18s when he retired from playing aged 30 and led the Gunners to the FA Youth Cup Final in his first season in charge.

Norwich boss Thorup hopes the appointment of Wilshere will help create more “interest” and “excitement” around the club.

When questioned about the association of someone of Wilshere’s quality, Thorup said to BBC Radio Norfolk: “We have to make sure we have people in the building that would be interesting for other clubs.”

He went on: “People want to be here because we are going to create something unique, plus an intriguing culture, environment, and style of play.

“And people from outside look at the people here and that’s a good connection to have because it creates some interest and it creates some excitement and that’s what we want.”

Last October, Wilshere discussed taking over as head coach of the Colorado Rapids, an MLS team, but decided to remain at Arsenal instead.

With nine points from their first six games of the season, Arsenal is ranked eleventh in the Premier League Under-18s standings. Coincidentally, their next game is on Saturday away at Norwich.

The first team of Norwich is aiming for promotion and currently sits eighth in the Championship.
