Charlie Mulgrew says he’s ‘100% confident’ his superfit Celtic oldies will win the Scottish Masters

Some of the biggest names in Scottish football from Aberdeen, Celtic, Dundee United and Rangers are to compete in a six-a-side tournament next month.

But as Charlie Mulgrew (who turned out for three of those clubs) admits, the players are all “getting on a bit”. Still, this year’s Scottish Masters promises to be another cracking event.

It has become a firm favourite with fans over the years, and for the second year running it will be screened live by BBC Scotland from Aberdeen’s P&J Live arena on Thursday, November 14.

Mulgrew, 38, currently plays for Doncaster City in the Abacus Lighting Central Midlands Alliance League, the 11th tier in the English pyramid. And he reckons he’s still got what it takes for the Hoops, where he won five titles and two Scottish Cups from 2010-2016.

Asked if his Celtic side can win the Scottish Masters tournament, the central defender replied: “100% – you’ve got to be. I’m sure everybody will feel the same, but I think you just don’t know what shape people are going to turn up in!

“You’d imagine the players on our team will keep themselves fit, especially Scott Brown. I played a couple of legends matches with him and he’s that fit that he could probably still play, and he was always fit as a player. So it’s great to have him on my team rather than playing against him, I don’t fancy chasing him around midfield.

“I’m optimistic and happy with our team. We’ve got goals in there with Gary Hooper, and Joe Ledley keeps himself reasonably fit. It’s a good team in their prime so they’ll still be at it.”

The other Celtic legends in the squad are Stiliyan Petrov, Simon Donnelly, Darren O’Dea and Michael McGovern. The Rangers squad features Barry Ferguson, Jermain Defoe, Kris Boyd, Lee McCulloch, Graham Dorrans, Pedro Mendes, Roy Carroll and Dean Sheils.

Speaking to gambling.com, Mulgrew added: “The funny thing is I play six-a-side quite regularly and sometimes Kris Boyd would play, so it’ll be interesting to play him in a competitive way again.”

“Obviously I played against him throughout my career. He’s a great striker that scores a lot of goals and definitely knows where the goal is. So it’ll be good to play against these types of players. I’ve played against Jermain Defoe a couple of times as well, and he’s somebody that you need to keep a close eye on.
