Duk sees Celtic penalty ‘mentalists’ eviscerated by ex ref as escalating Aberdeen conspiracy theory gets IFAB check

The late VAR drama at Celtic Park saw the Dons’ attacker deny the Scottish champions a victory.

Bobby Madden, a former SFA referee, has supported referee Nick Walsh and the VAR crew in the face of criticism over Aberdeen’s late

corner against Celtic.

After goalkeeper Dimitor Mitov had first plucked Adam Idah’s header from point blank range out of the net, Duk was the hero at the

back for Jimmy Thelin’s team. In injury time, he flung his body in front of Alistair Johnston’s low shot. The Aberdeen attacker cleared

the ball for a corner, and referee Walsh first gave the ball a corner deep into injury time. However, VAR intervened to look for a

possible handball.

With 102 minutes remaining, the full-time whistle was blown after Duk was exonerated of the offence by Greg Aitken and the

Clydesdale House team. But angry supporters have taken to social media to express their displeasure with the choice to let Brendan

Rodgers’ team take the corner late in the game.

Madden has shut down the criticism on Instagram. In the 12th minute of the MINIMUM 10 minutes of extra time, he commented on

Instagram, saying, “Need to clear up a few of things regarding the penalty claim.

The ball did not strike the Aberdeen defender’s hand, as the evidence clearly shows. The ball strikes the defender’s leg, then their body.

It’s accurate. VAR, however, has to and has looked at this matter.

“A corner is taken with the ball right after the incident. But the game is done, the timer has gone off. The referee is not allowed to blow

for full time, order players off the pitch, let personnel onto the pitch or order spectators out of the stadium while a check is being

conducted.

Could you picture saying, “Oh wait, we have an on-field review,” after blowing throughout the entire game? There would be

devastation. That’s why, as was the case yesterday, the protocol is in place to handle it. The check took almost a minute to complete,

which caused a delay in the game. The full time whistle was blown once everything was finished and no penalty was established.”
