Brendan Rodgers accused of Aberdeen sin in telling Celtic interview as ‘marginal’ VAR reminder clamps narrative

The Dons thought they’d won at Celtic Park until the off-field staff chalked down Duk’s strike.

Willie Miller, an Aberdeen great, has dismissed Brendan Rodgers’ claim that Celtic should have won their top-of-the-table battle. It was a thrilling match as the top two teams in the Scottish Premiership clashed, with the Dons needing to claw back Celtic after they established a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to goals from Reo Hatate and Kyogo. Jimmy Thelin introduced a reinvigorated Reds in the second half, and Ester Sokler equalised before Aberdeen skipper Graeme Shinnie had his shot ricochet out of Kasper Schmeichel’s grasp.

It leaves the two teams level on points, with the Hoops narrowly leading on goal difference – but Miller was quick to point out that things could have gone very differently at Celtic Park. Rodgers told BBC Sportsound that his team deserved to win despite losing a two-goal lead at Glasgow’s east end.

However, Miller pointed out that the Reds were one VAR call away from reclaiming all three points in Granite City. With the game tied 2-2, Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic met a free kick from the left that cannoned off Duk and past Kasper Schmeichel.

However, the forward would be punished for handball and the team’s effort at Clydesdale House – a flashpoint Miller was keen to point out that Rodgers skipper had overstepped. When asked if he agreed with the Celtic manager that the hosts should have won, Dons legend Miller replied: “They created a number of opportunities, but Aberdeen had that goal hacked off.

“That appeared to bypass Brendan during the interview. It was also highly marginal. Yes, they had plenty of chances, and you would expect Celtic to produce them, but Aberdeen remained firm; Mitov made some amazing saves, and that is what they are there for.

“I felt it was refreshing. Jimmy Thelin and Aberdeen deserve a lot of credit for coming here and playing toe-to-toe.”
