Carlos Corberan hits out at what West Brom didn’t do well enough v Oxford

Carlos Corberan hits out at what West Brom didn’t do well enough v Oxford.

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan criticised his team’s game management after they surrendered late to draw at Oxford United on Saturday afternoon.

The U’s have been impressive, particularly at home, since their return to the second division, but Karlan Grant’s first-half goal put Albion on track for a crucial three points. Despite the fact that the Baggies appeared to be in control in the second half, Dane Scarlett saved a point for Oxford in stoppage time, leaving Corberan’s side winless in four games.

Carlos Corberan for West Brom

Carlos Corberan expects greater game management from West Brom.

Corberan told the club’s reporters after the match that his team could have been better at preserving possession and limiting Oxford’s opportunities to get the ball in the box. “The manner we squandered our advantage demonstrates that we could have handled the final few minutes of the game better. The last moment is not the time to take further risks and break the press. It’s time to put the ball in the attacking half and figure out how to defend yourself with the ball. You must keep the ball and deny the opponent the opportunity to assault you.

“If you don’t do that, they have the opportunity to attack you, put balls in the box, and create something. That’s the moment we’ll regret. We were unable to get the ball into the attacking half, and without creating chances, they won a throw-in, giving them the opportunity to score the goal.

“The players in the locker room are upset and frustrated.” I do not need to encourage anyone to do better. We understand how difficult the Championship is and how each game is a unique challenge. To win games, we must find ways to have more control over the specifics.

West Brom must become more ruthless in both boxes.

I’m This was a tremendously painful game for Albion since it appeared like they had won, but a failure to deal with a long throw resulted in two points being dropped extremely late.

This has recently become a theme, with Albion now winless in four games, and they are failing to get over the line. To be fair to the defence, they have been excellent overall, but they turned off the set-play today. Previously, there has been a lack of cutting edge in the last third, as shown in their 0-0 draw with Millwall. So it’s a collective responsibility, which will undoubtedly irritate Corberan, given that Albion aren’t being outplayed or clinging on for dear life in games.

Championship Table
Team P GD Pts
1 Burnley 10 12 21
2 Sunderland 9 10 19
3 Leeds United 10 10 19
4 Sheffield United 10 7 19
5 West Brom 10 6 18
6 Blackburn Rovers 10 5 18

Instead, it’s about not losing concentration or showing a more clinical edge up top; if that had happened, they might be at the top of the league right now, but the standards have slipped significantly in recent games, and it’s proven to be very costly. All attention will now be focused on West Brom’s midweek trip to Blackburn as they try to get back on track. It will undoubtedly be a difficult test, as John Eustace’s side has the same number of points as Albion and now occupy the final play-off spot in the Championship.
