Two players being ‘watched’ by Wolves as one position made top priority for January transfer window

It’s no secret which position the wolves have designated as their top goal to strengthen.

Gary O’Neil’s team has had a terrible start to the Premier League season, with only one point from their first seven games, placing them at the bottom of the standings.

In addition, Wolves have been giving up goals for pleasure; in their two games prior to the international break, they gave up five goals at Brentford and six against Chelsea.

The season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera hasn’t helped the Old Gold either, but their issues sprang from their inability to find a replacement for Max Kilman during the summer.

Kilman’s departure to West Ham left just Craig Dawson, Toti Gomes, Mosquera and Santi Bueno, with O’Neil realising that not filling his void was detrimental.

After Mosquera’s injury, Wolves were thinking of acquiring James Tomkins and Paul Dummett, the former defender for Newcastle United.

Allegations that they planned to sign Dummett and Tomkins were swiftly denied by O’Neil, who also explained the difficulty in obtaining a free-agent centre-back with Premier League eligibility.

That hasn’t stopped the Wolves manager from making plans for the January transfer window, though, as transfer analyst Grahame Bailey exclusively revealed to Molineux News that O’Neil will bolster his defence with a centre-back, citing Dan Ballard, Anel Ahmedhodzic, and Christopher Wooh as three players they’re considering.

“It’s safe to say we see one CB come in January. I’ve been told they are looking around. They watched Wooh, as we know, but they are looking closely at abroad and England and are being offered many different players,” Bailey stated.

“They are observing the Championship, and I have been informed that they have been following two players this season: Anel Ahmedhodzic of Sheffield United and Dan Ballard of Sunderland.”

Wolves have previously shown an interest in Ahmedhodzic but were unwilling to pay the £20 million asking price while Ballard and Wooh are two names that have recently popped onto the radar.

A quality centre-back won’t come cheap for Wolves

O’Neil previously stated that player sales, not Fosun’s purse, will be the source of future expenditure for the Wolves.

This implies that the Old Gold would have to go with aplayer for a sizeable amount in January to spend big money on a defender.

Acquiring a top-notch centre-back in January is probably not going to be inexpensive, as teams are hesitant to let go of key players midway through the season unless the offer is unquestionable.

Moves for Ahmedhodzic and Ballard appear improbable because Sheffield United and Sunderland may still be in the running for promotion at the beginning of next season.

But it’s important to keep a watch on Wooh, the Cameroonian international who plays for Rennes in Ligue 1, since O’Neil might consider him when the winter transfer window opens.
