Paul Merson makes ‘huge’ call in score prediction for Southampton vs Leicester City
At the bottom of the Premier League, Leicester City faces Southampton in an early relegation six-pointer.
After being promoted from the Championship the previous season, Southampton and Leicester have both struggled
in the Premier League.
The Foxes didn’t start strong until the seventh gameweek, when Leicester defeated Bournemouth 1-0 thanks to a goal
from Facundo Buonanotte.
With three points, they were able to relieve some of Steve Cooper’s strain and move up to 15th place, four places and
five points ahead of Southampton.
Ben Brereton Diaz’s winless streak in the Premier League now stands at 20 games, exemplifying Russell Martin’s
team’s terrible season.
Nevertheless, Leicester must make sure he doesn’t break that record since the Chilean striker will be eager to do so
on Saturday afternoon.
The only injuries or absences for Leicester coming into this game following the international break are Buonanotte,
Patson Daka, and Hamza Choudhury.
Cooper did indicate Wilfred Ndidi will be available for the trip to St Mary’s; like in the victory over Bournemouth, he
should start with Oliver Skipp again.
Although it’s very hard to predict this game, Paul Merson believes Leicester’s victory before halftime could be the
spark that sends the Saints spiralling deeper into problems, even though they’ve started the season better than the
other team.
Merson writes that Leicester City will win 2-1 in his column for Sportsskeeda. He says, “Leicester City had a massive
win before the international break, that will be a huge boost for them.” They are currently ranked fifteenth in the
table, which should clarify the significance of that outcome. Leicester will have a significant advantage over
Southampton if they win this game.
“Leicester will remain confident after their victory over Bournemouth, even after the international break. There’s too much pressure on Southampton, and I predict Leicester winning this one.
Leicester’s fixture against Southampton could be season-defining
Even though this is only the eighth game week of the season, the victor of the relegation six-point shootout typically
gains more self-assurance.
After gaining three points against the Saints, Leicester might have a huge season. They have already experienced
their first three points of the year.
Position | Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | For | Against | Diff | Points |
13 | Bournemouth | 7 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 8 | 10 | -2 | 8 |
14 | Manchester United | 7 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 8 | -3 | 8 |
15 | Leicester | 7 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 9 | 12 | -3 | 6 |
16 | Everton | 7 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 15 | -8 | 5 |
17 | Ipswich | 7 | 0 | 4 | 3 | 6 | 14 | -8 | 4 |
It would calm their anxieties ahead of a demanding winter schedule and build up an eight-point lead going into
winnable games against Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.
It has been anticipated that Leicester would avoid relegation this season, but they can only achieve that goal if they
defeat their relegation rivals in a game they absolutely must win.
