‘Excellent’ – West Brom man hailed by Carlos Corberan following return to the Midlands

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has said Karlan Grant has been competing at an ‘excellent’ level so far this season.

West Brom have welcomed back the attacker from his loan spell away at fellow Championship side Cardiff City last season.

Grant, 27, is under contract at The Hawthorns until June 2026 and has been given a new lease of life with the Midlands outfit recently.

Corberan has been impressed and has said, as per a report by the Express & Star: “Karlan Grant has been competing at an excellent level. Even if (Mikey) Johnston came to the same club, we are not the same team. Last year, for example, on the left he was playing with (Conor) Townsend. This year they are not playing together. He is playing with another player who does different things.

“Last year we were playing with (Brandon) Thomas-Asante and (Jed) Wallace mainly as strikers. This year you are playing with Josh Maja so it means that the type of solutions you need are different. These things need time to adapt for him, for me, for the team and for everyone.

“The minutes of the last game that he was playing helped him massively. I can tell you this because I can see this. Now when I see him in training I can see the work in defence, I can see his reactions, I can see the link with the players so I can see more now again let’s say with more integration to the team. Now he is getting closer to the level of integration that he had before he left the club.”

West Brom signed Grant back in 2020 to bolster their attacking department whilst they were still in the Premier League.

He has since made 105 appearances in all competitions for the Baggies and has scored 25 goals.

The forward was given the green light to link up with Cardiff City on a temporary basis in the last campaign and he found the net on six occasions in 40 games for the Bluebirds before heading back to his parent club.

Grant gives Corberan another option to pick from and more competition and depth going forward.

The ex-England youth international rose up through the academy ranks at Charlton Athletic and went on to play 98 times for their first-team as a youngster, scoring 21 times. He also had loan spells away from The Valley at Cambridge United and Crawley Town.

Huddersfield Town snapped him up in 2018 and he spent two years at the John Smith’s Stadium before West Brom came calling.

What now?

Grant is back on the scene with the Baggies and has been given a second chance by Corberan.

They are back in action after the international break with an away trip to the Kassam Stadium this weekend to take on Oxford United.
